It’s hard to believe that 2017 is almost over! The end of the year often involves year-end lists – and this post is no exception. Here is a list of the most searched for terms on the National Council of Teachers of English website, paired with resources that might come in handy in the new year and next semester.
Convention
This search term makes sense since we just returned from #NCTE17. We are already planning ahead to #NCTE18 and the call for proposals is already live! Submit an idea for the November 2018 Annual Convention in Houston.
The Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) is also completing plans for the 2018 CCCC Annual Convention March 14-17, 2018 in Kansas City, MO. Learn more about the convention, “Languaging, Laboring, and Transforming.”
Journals
Whether you are an elementary language arts teacher or a literature professor, NCTE has a peer-reviewed journal for you, with content reflecting current research, trends, and strategies. Our 10 professional journals are available in paper and online, along with an extensive archive of past issues.
Writing and Composition
NCTE hosts an entire month that celebrates writing and #WhyIWrite. In addition, NCTE has a large number of position statements and policy briefs on a variety of education issues vital to the teaching and learning of English language arts.
Informational Texts
With the shift towards the increased inclusion of informational texts, the new NCTE book Continuing the Journey: Becoming a Better Teacher of Literature and Informational Texts offers practical advice, encouragement, and cutting-edge ideas for today’s English classroom.
Poetry
Poetry promotes literacy, builds community, and elicits emotional responses. For these, and many more reasons, NCTE has a plethora of resources on poetry – books, journal articles, lesson plans, professional learning opportunities, among others!
Censorship
Through our Intellectual Freedom Center, NCTE offers advice, helpful documents, and other support to teachers faced with challenges to texts (e.g. literary works, films and videos, drama productions), to student writing, or to teaching methods used in their classrooms and schools.
Book Awards
NCTE presents several awards each year to recognize outstanding books written for all levels. Learn more about outstanding fiction for children, excellence in the writing of nonfiction for children, as well as other awards.
